When you need more intensive treatment to combat the signs of aging but aren’t willing to go under the knife, our Med Spa in Denver has options. One of the most effective non-invasive treatments is microneedling
What is Microneedling?
Microneedling is a technique that stimulates collagen and elastin production by gently pricking the skin’s surface with a series of sterilized, razor-sharp needles mounted on a hand-held roller. Although it might sound drastic, this procedure is minimally invasive and highly effective.
Is Microneedling Safe?
It’s normal for people to get nervous when they hear words like “needles”, but this technique only causes mild discomfort. In fact, it’s less invasive than laser treatments and less harsh than a chemical peel. The whole process is safe, sterile, and takes about 20 – 30 minutes per session.
Before treating the targeted areas, our aesthetician will apply topical anesthesia to minimize the feeling of the derma roller while it’s being applied to your skin. Our Procell Microchanneling System is used in conjunction with a stem-cell-based serum that’s enhanced with growth boosters to encourage cellular regeneration. The microneedles create channels on the surface of your skin that allow the serum to penetrate deeper into the dermis where it will provide the greatest benefit.
When the goal is reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, a derma roller with 0.5 mm – 1.0 mm needles is used. The needles used to treat scarring and more serious issues are 1.5 – 2 mm long. Any marks that are left behind are virtually microscopic, but there will be some slight bleeding, redness, and mild swelling.
You can usually carry on with your normal routine as long as you follow some basic aftercare practices while the area heals. Avoid touching your skin in treatment areas or using harsh cleaners and abrasives, and keep the area clean. The biggest side-effect is that your skin will looker plumper, shinier, and a little pink for a few weeks after treatment.
Microneedling Frequency and Cost
Microneedling is a process. Although you will notice some improvement after your first session, optimal results will need an average of four sessions to come to fruition. It’s recommended that you space the initial sessions out to one per month.
You can maintain your new, youthful glow between touch-ups with a gentle daily skincare routine and more intensive facials as recommended. Since the effects can last for up to six months, touch-ups are advised two – three times a year.
The cost of microneedling is much lower than expensive laser treatments, and certainly less than surgery. Treatments start at $150 per session, or you can get a discounted price by booking your first six sessions at once.
There are less expensive derma rollers available at drug and beauty supply shops. However, the quality, sterility, and effectiveness can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. There’s also a higher risk of injury or infection if you try to DIY.
Our aestheticians are trained and certified to perform medical-grade procedures and minimize the risks. We also have access to superior products that complement the benefits of microneedling.
5 Benefits of Microneedling Treatments
Now that you know more about the microneedling process, it’s time to hear more about its benefits.
Here are five of the most important.
1. Microneeding Isn’t Just for Facial Skin
This is one of the few anti-aging medical treatments that can be used almost anywhere on the body. Chemical peels, dermaplane, and other medical treatments are targeted toward addressing beauty concerns on the face. Microneedling can be applied anywhere from your scalp down to your feet.
2. Microneedling Gives Promotes Cell Regeneration
The process that provides a benefit from microneedling is called collagen induction therapy (CIT). It works by triggering the body’s own healing mechanism by promoting the release of collagen and sending it to the puncture sites so that new cells can grow. This makes microneedling effective for improving the appearance of minor scars, pitting, and stretch marks. It also promotes hair growth on the scalp.
3. You’ll See Fewer Wrinkles
When you boost collagen production and skin elasticity, a natural side-effect is fewer wrinkles and fine lines. Your face will be plumper and more youthful almost immediately. The action of the needles also allows the introduction of nourishing ingredients from serums to reach the dermal layer. This supports hydration and cell regeneration below the skin surface.
4. Your Skin Tone and Texture Will Improve
If you’re prone to minor skin discoloration from age spots, rosacea, or sun damage, microneedling can improve the appearance without damaging your skin like harsh chemical abrasives. This is due to accelerated cell turnover and higher collagen levels produced by the effects of the derma roller activating these processes. The improved hydration also reduces the appearance of dry, crepey skin.
5. Microneedling Tightens Your Skin
Another benefit of microneedling is skin tightening, especially on areas like the face, stomach, and buttocks. This is because the same process that promotes collagen production also repairs elastin fibers that break down as you age. It won’t perform miracles, but you will notice younger, firmer skin throughout the treatment area.
Is Microneedling Right for me?
Although microneedling is generally safe and non-invasive, there are some people who should avoid this treatment, or at least put it off for a little while. If you’re prone to bleeding, clotting, or you’re taking blood thinners, this may not be the right procedure for you. Similarly, those who have a skin condition like eczema, diabetes, or a depressed immune system should consider their options before undergoing this treatment.
When in doubt, consult your physician or discuss any concerns with our aesthetician when you visit our Med Spa.
