Of all the recent advances in skincare and rejuvenation, light therapy may be one of the easiest and most effortless. You simply lay back and bath your face or body in soothing hues of red or blue.
When combined with targeted skincare treatments, light therapy addresses a range of beauty issues from premature aging to scarring.
What is Light Therapy?
Light therapy, also known as light-emitting diode therapy, involves using LED technology in the blue or red spectrum of light to address specific issues like sun damage, acne scars, and loss of elasticity.
This type of treatment evolved from NASA experimentation to help astronauts grow vegetation during shuttle missions. A side-effect of their experiments was that the various LED wavelengths also appeared to heal minor skin wounds. After this discovery, light therapy was used by Navy Seals to treat skin injuries and regenerate damaged muscle tissue in the field.
The use of blue or red LED wavelengths for addressing beauty concerns is now available at Med Spas in the Denver area, including Vesper Gray Skin Care.
Types of Light Therapy for Skin Care
Light therapy works by allowing the healing properties of blue or red LED wavelengths to gently penetrate your skin. The type of light used depends on the issues that need addressing.
- Blue LED therapy: Bathing the skin in waves of LED light on the blue side of the spectrum has been shown to have an antiseptic effect. This type of therapy is used for reducing the bacterial buildup below the skin surface and decrease oil production that leads to blocked pores and acne breakouts.
Blue light therapy targets overactive sebaceous glands to restrict oil secretions and bring them back to the normal levels needed for maintaining and lubricating the skin and hair.
- Red LED therapy: Using the light from the red end of the spectrum supports regenerative effects on the epidermis or outer layer of the skin. This treatment results in the reduction of the appearance of acne scars, stretch marks, and fine lines or wrinkles.
It works by stimulating collagen and elastin production below the skin surface. This treatment also helps to reduce inflammation in the skin and promote even skin tone and coloring.
These two forms of light therapy can be used separately or in combination to provide effective treatments that go beyond skin deep.
The recommended course of treatment is one session weekly for one month, with maintenance sessions once every month or so after that. The length and course of treatment depend on the condition of your skin, the severity of the issues, and your ultimate beauty goals.
The cost of light therapy depends upon the type of therapy and any other services you’re receiving. We offer packages starting at just $40 per 30-minute session.
Three Benefits of Light Therapy for skin
If you’re not yet convinced about why light therapy is beneficial, here are three more incentives to try it.
Light Therapy is Relaxing and Painless
Imagine getting all of the advantages of a skincare treatment without needles, messy creams, or surgery. While light therapy isn’t a cure-all or one-time procedure, it does provide lasting, visible benefits when coupled with an effective daily skincare routine that focuses on preserving the advantages of more intensive treatments.
Light Therapy Will Improve the Texture and Appearance of Your Skin
We’ve already mentioned the effects of light therapy on collagen production, fine lines and wrinkles, and scarring. But, did you know that LED light wavelengths also improve the overall texture and pigmentation of your skin?
Try this treatment to improve the appearance of:
- Freckles
- Age spots
- Rosacea
- Spider veins
- Vitiligo
- Cellulite
Light Therapy Makes you Feel Good
One of the hidden benefits of light therapy is mood elevation. This is not only a result of the relaxing atmosphere at our Med Spa. The same wavelengths that stimulate collagen production also promote the release of serotonin, your body’s equivalent to taking a happy pill without the nasty side effects.
Is Light Therapy Safe?
Unlike the type of light therapy used to treat Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), LED light therapy contains no harmful UV rays. That means it won’t further damage skin or contribute to the signs of premature aging. As long as you protect your eyes by wearing tanning goggles, it’s non-invasive and safe for nearly all skin types or ages.
However, there are some people who should be careful before undergoing light therapy for skincare.
Those who are currently using products such as Accutane to control acne breakouts shouldn’t use light therapy. The same is true if you have an active skin rash or have experienced problems with light therapy in the past.
You can purchase the equipment needed to perform light therapy at home. However, products available at your local pharmacy or beauty supply store don’t have the strength to achieve noticeable improvement, even with daily use. This equipment is also usually sold to the general public in the form of masks or wands that offer limited coverage.
Getting light therapy at a Med Spa under the guidance of a licensed aesthetician offers a more intensive experience and superior results overall. Not only that, it provides you with services that you can feel good about in a space where people care about your well-being.
